99.9 SII -- EPISODE 1

Since I don't really like to add too many T/N in the subs (tho I really added a lot of them in episode 1 for my standards) because I find them a bit of annoying, I am making a post for the little things that appear in the drama but didn't make it to the T/N's, and also added a bit more extended some trivia about other things that did get to be in the subs.

Also, note that while there are more, but some haven't made it to this post. And I have probably missed many other.
If you have found any that may be interesting, feel free to comment!

Also, we will be adding links to the posts with trivia to the subs masterpost (so no need to add me to keep track)
*Click on the images to enlarge them

First of all, here is the chart:

Let's begin!

~ Episode 1 ~

1. About the "なー!"
The actor playing Matsuo, is Nagae Kenji, that shout of "na!" seems to be a known line from him. But didn't spend much looking for the origin.

He did mention in his blog that they all kept saying "Na-!" too much, though XD

2. Now, you may wonder why they zoomed in the contracts Sada was stamping after going back to civil affairs... If you don't know who some of the people mentioned are, you can google them.

[Gates Bill = Bill Gates]
From what I've read, the representative name can be taken as Microsoft. Tho I don't know how that comes from the last kanji
[Representative director: Maiku Ro**] - Maikurosofuto (Microsoft)
From the address: ロビンソンビル -- Billy Robinson

3. Moving to Sada's office. I added a bit of this after he moves back to his previous office but!
There in the back, you can see two awards:
咲雷賞 [Sakurai Shou (Award)] -- Sakurai Sho (櫻井翔)
愛川賞 [Aikawa Shou (Award)] -- Aikawa Sho (哀川翔)

4. Now, this one made it to the T/N:
SADA Records producing Kata Kanako's albums.
The poster: Kata Kanako's Sakurai Award (Shou) winning Horse Sada's Win theme song: Run! Sada's Win!

5. Madarame's line is something we already heard in season 1. It's something that pro-wrestler Rainmaker Okada apparently says (I says apparently, because despite all I have read about pro-wrestlers since season 1, I still know nothing about them)
Third... There is nothing in particular.
He says he's going to say three things, just to dump that at the third one as we saw in season 1 (episode 5?)

We had Okada himself saying it at the end of the episode.

6. In Fujino's words, Tachibana has gone to a "mada minu sekai e" [まだ見ぬ世界へ (A world not yet seen)], anything comes to your mind?

7. Other one that made it as T/N:
ひと貸しいこうぜ -- Let's go for a loan!
It's a reference to Monster Hunt: Hito kari ikou ze! [ひと狩りいこうぜ(Let's go for a hunt)]

8. 七転び早起き [nana korobi, hayaoki] -- Fall seven times, wake up early.
This is a pun from 七転び八起き [nana korobi, ya oki]

Also from the office, we have this paper that says [Nanigoto mo shinchousa ga sugoku daiji (Carefulness is very important in everything)], again a word play with 慎重さ [shinchousa (caution)] and 身長差 [shinchou sa (height difference)]

Taguchi Japan
Taguchi Japan [タグチジャパン] is pro-wrestler Taguchi's pro-wrestling unit.
You can spot the photos around the office.

10. There are references here too. I got these ones looking around, btw.
大雲丹のランチ [Dai/oo uni no ranchi (big urchin lunch)] -- 応仁の乱 [ounin no ran (Ounin War)]
[Shimabara no ran (Shimabara Rebellion)]
[Pootsumasu jouyaku (Treaty of Portsmouth)]
[Bunmeikaika (Japan's Westernization movement during Meiji Era)]
[Shorui awaremi no rei (ordinances of animal protection)]

11. Kanako's new album!
わたしのcurryは舌が危機![Watashi no curry wa shita ga kiki(My curry has my tongue in crisis)]
I already mentioned the play between the word "カレー" (karee), meaning curry and "彼" (kare) meaning boyfriend.
Actually, the album title is a parody of 私の彼は左利き [Watashi no kare wa hidarikiki (My boyfriend is lefthanded)] by Asaoka Megumi.
I want the "I ❤Hiroto" sticker she has in her guitar *_*

12. I talked a bit about this one in the subs.
[Purinto Devitt (Print Devitt)] is a reference to プリンス・デヴィット [Purinsu Devitt (Prince Devitt)], a former pro-wrestler.
Also, the next line by Ochiai (It's real), seems to be a frequent line by their pro-wrestling club "Bullet Club", a pro-wrestling group, primarily appearing in New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Prince Devitt is a member of that club.
I couldn't find who or when or in what circumstances they say "It's real", so if anybody knows?

Also, there are things that don't need translation or to be pointed out, like Akashi's Hoya-Boya hair, so I have omitted those references. Same with references to season one, that can be easily spotted. But if you think would be better to have them, let me know.

Who appeared on episode 1 (and are connected to some of the puns, quotes, etc)

Nagae Kenji as Matsuo-shitshuchou

Okada Kazuchika as himself. Tachibana would be happy.

This is really interesting to see!
It's cute how they used the puns from the person himself >v<

Also, I just learned that there's an Arashi song titled "Mada Minu Sekai e" after seeing this XDD

Thank you for this summary!!

I think that this line -->
It refers to the one Miyama had said to one of the paralegal in season 1, where she said that she never goes out without at least taking a bath first. Miyama then gave her the papers (that he needed help with) and said to her "Let's go together to that unknown world" and that's how I think it was repeated here (I make that connection though)

I didn't know whether it refers to Arashi's song (they have the song that called mada minu sekai e, right? I forgot, it's been too long) or not, but I think it's just a coincidence and it refers more to that episode in season 1 rather than Arashi's song. Or maybe it is, who knows
~Ria~fickleunicorn on January 22nd, 2018 12:56 pm (UTC)
uhmm I thought about that line from season 1, but I didn't think the situations were related.
If they'd had said that line about the former paralegal and not about Tachibana, I would have linked it totally with the line from season 1.
But the line in season 1 is said by Miyama to Natsuko (?), about her not taking a bath because of overtime and living hell because of that XD While the one in season 2 was said about Tachibana going to study abroad, and said by Fujino.
So somehow, it seemed more a reference of the song than a proper reference to the line in season 1...
That said, true, is a line that appeared in season 1, and considering how they are, it may be a reference to many things XD
I don't know if that all made any sense XD
harunomasuharunomasu on January 23rd, 2018 05:07 am (UTC)
Well, since it's about the drama I make the connection with the drama rather than Arashi's songs. I guess I'm just that kind of person

It might be a reference to Arashi's songs, it might be not. Who knows? The writer of this drama always surprises me after all

hopefully they will fully reveal what happened

Thank you for the very detailed notes! Just curious: what made you decide to go hunting for Easter eggs for this season of 99.9?
tabunhappy: pic#128011732tabunhappy on January 23rd, 2018 04:26 pm (UTC)
I'm curious of why you are curious? :)
Adette: Arashimelodyofmysoul on January 24th, 2018 02:15 am (UTC)
Just genuinely curious. :D I'm aware you've had translator's notes in your subs since Season 1 (though I can't remember if each episode had notes), but I can't recall if you also had this kind of entry explaining additional Easter eggs back then. This is really informative, though! Gives fans a glimpse of how the dorama staff love to sneak in references.

Thank you, that's so cool ! :D

My favourite was 咲雷賞 [Sakurai Shou (Award)] -- Sakurai Sho (櫻井翔) hahahahaha

Also, the [まだ見ぬ世界へ (A world not yet seen)]... so subtle!

Genious! xD

I just started watching so I'll be reading these posts slowly but my brother is a wrestling fan and that includes Japanese wrestling of late, especially New Japan. He said that Prince Devitt was more popular in 2013-2014 or so with that "it's real!" line.

"That line is so old!" was his actual comment LOL

It's rare that my Japanese hobby (Arashi) and his Japanese hobby (wrestling) overlap, so this drama is a dream come true for bringing families together LMAO
~Ria~: pic#123634304fickleunicorn on March 19th, 2018 09:40 am (UTC)
That's great! Thank your brother for that, because I couldn't find much about the "it's real" quote!

Also, there are more pro-wrestlers coming up in next episodes!
I thought there wouldn't be much references this season because Tachibana wasn't there but... They gave us nakatsuka! XD

Enjoy the drama!!
